The below Blueberry model is the 1999 second version with a slot-loading, rather than tray-loading, DVD-ROM drive, boasting 64MB of memory, ATI graphics, a 6GB hard drive and PowerPC 750 processor.ĭan Grabham is the former associate editor at Pocket-lint working across features, news and reviews and has extensive experience writing about computing, mobile and internet topics. But there was never a G5 laptop (too hot, but there was a PowerMac G5) and the G6 never saw the light of day PowerPC chips simply couldn’t compete with Intel’s performance. Later chips saw Apple use G4 and G5 to name its products. Apple's forgotten tech: The Apple products you won't remember. It broke up when Apple announced it would move to Intel in 2005 (Motorola left the alliance in 2004). Nowadays, of course, Macs use Intel chips but back in 1998, Intel was seven years off announcing its move to Intel. PowerPC was a 1991 alliance between Motorola, IBM and Apple. We've actually disassembled one and all the components are incredibly tightly packed inside the case.Īt the heart of the iMac was the PowerPC 750 processor, known as G3. So for Apple to be able to squeeze speakers, a CD drive (no floppy, controversial at the time), hard drive, graphics and mainboard into this shape remains rather incredible. A keyboard with benefits. But a CRT is a rather big component. Pros: Full fledged keyboard, USB passthrough, nice design (exterior), usable Power ButtonĬons: USB cable can be damaged if tugged, plastic clips can break easily. So overall, this keyboard is pretty neat, and does the job if needed as a day-to-day keyboard. (I tested it with the iMac “Hockey Puck” mouse that matched the keyboard.) One thing I should mention here is that not only does this keyboard use a standard USB cable, but it has 2 USB passthrough ports on it, for use with any other devices (Mouse, flashdrive, etc), and while I haven’t tested the speeds it can give, it works perfectly with a mouse. There is no Scroll Lock key anywhere on this keyboard. ![]() The Number Lock key, however, doesn’t have an LED, which is really odd in my opinion. The Caps Lock key has a green LED on it which lights up when Caps Lock is on. With that said, the key itself is completely mappable, so you can make it do pretty much anything you want, so treat it like an extra key.Īs for the Caps/Number/Scroll lock keys. Although, if you aren’t using a Mac, it will not do anything. The power button is just a bit of plastic held in place by the front bit of plastic, and it does it’s job really. If you’re using this on a Windows computer, the equal key on the number pad won’t do anything unless you map it using 3rd party software (Which is what I did.) ![]() The number pad is slightly changed around to add an equal key (Even though the enter key acts as the equal key on 99% of calculators). The keys type really well, but are non-standard to the other QWERTY keyboards found here in the US. I f you plan on buying one of these, be aware that you might have to deal with this issue, as they aren’t that easy to break if you aren’t extremely careful with it while opening. (They’re entirely made of plastic.) This became a problem for me, as all but one of the clips at the front of the keyboard were broken off, leaving the translucent bit of plastic loosely stuck onto the frame of the keyboard. While the design of the keyboard is really nice, it has some flaws.Īny accidental tugging on the USB cord can end up pulling it out a bit too far (Doesn’t damage it really, but is really noticeable.)Īlso, if you ever had to open up the keyboard and didn’t know what you were doing, the plastic clips can break off. This is the keyboard that Apple would usually sell along with those old CRT iMac computers. I had recently bought one of these off of this site, and upon opening the box once it arrived, I figured a couple things out about this particular iMac keyboard. ![]()
